The chilean summer, like most other southern hemisphere countries, runs from december through to march.

While visits to the north of the country are little affected by the changing of the seasons, it’s important to plan your trip according to the time of year if you want to visit the central and southern zones of Chile because the weather varies greatly.

Here’s a list of ten reasons why visiting Chile in the summer months is a good idea.

  • Reason 1: 76% of South America’s glaciers are in Chile and summer’s the best season to explore them.

  • Reason 2: Enjoy clear views across the Torres Del Paine National Park.

  • Reason 3: Refresh in the warmer waters of the beaches in the north.

  • Reason 4: Explore vineyards by bike and savour our wine outdoors.

  • Reason 5: It’s an excellent season to discover the various locations along the Carretera Austral.

  • Reason 6: Santiago comes to life thanks to range of cultural activities.

  • Reason 7: Don’t miss the chance of practicing all the outdoors activities that Chile has to offer.

  • Reason 8: Try the most delicious typical dishes from the season like «pastel de choclo», «humitas» and all the kinds of bean plates.

  • Reason 9: Relax in the thermal baths that can be found across the entire country.

  • Reason 10: We recomend you take advantage of the warm climate and travel south to PuertoVaras.

SANTIAGO FOR EVERYONE

Theme parks with modern, mechanical rides, zoos that allow you to discover wildlife up-close and interactive science, are just some of the entertainment panoramas for families that Chile’s capital has to offer

ANIMAL ADVENTURE

Zoos are one of the outings most favored by children all across the world. In Santiago, the most visited is Chile’s National Zoo, located within Santiago’s Metropolitan. It spans across 722 hectares of green pastures on the San Cristobal Hill, a green area which dominates the city center

Its attractions include more than 1000 animals of 158 different species, a combination of native and international fauna. One of the best things about the zoo is that, on top of enjoying what the park has to offer, visitors can also learn more about the species that inhabit the zoo, including the Andean condor and the guanaco, via talks and exhibitions.

Another animal panorama is Buin Zoo, located on the outskirts of Santiago in the Buin neighborhood. With an endless array of attractions, including the arthropod gallery, aviary and petting zoo, called Baby Zoo, this zoo has transformed into a favorite place for families to visit. During the summer, evening tours are offered in order to observe how the animals behave at night. A good way of arriving to this place is to take the “Metrotren”, which leaves every half hour from Estación Central in Santiago. The journey lasts just 25 minutes.

“Granjaventura” (FarmAdventure), located within La Reina, a neighborhood in Santiago that runs along the base of The Andes mountain range, is another alternative. In this place it’s possible to interact directly with farm animals, including horses, cows, sheep, donkeys, alpacas, goats, ostriches, rabbits, chickens and ducks.

CULTURE FOR THE LITTLE ONES

The city’s large cultural centers also offer options for children. For example, Santiago’s Library comes equipped with rooms designed for children up to eight years of age that are ideal for learning and play. The building, located in the Quinta Normal neighborhood in the west of the city, houses more than 300.000 books, as well as films, CDs and computers with access to the internet.

Santiago’s Planetarium is another ideal place for everyone. Built in the 1980s, this space has transformed into a classic outing for schools and families. Through didactic stories, educational content is imparted related to astronomy and the creation of the universe. It’s located within the confines of the University of Santiago and it’s easy to get to by metro (subway).

Without a doubt, one of the preferred panoramas for children in Santiago is the Interactive Lookout Museum – Museo Interactivo Mirador (MIM) – the largest and most modern cultural entertainment complex in Chile. It’s not only the preferred choice owing to what it has to offer, but also because of its original take on educational entertainment. Visitors are able to interact with a wide range of exhibitions that are related to mechanics, biology, physics, history and art.

A similar option is the Artequin Museum, a space that looks to encourage adults, as well as children, to step into the world of art via visual reproductions and artistic sculptures of the western world, interactive games, guided tours and workshops. It’s situated in the beautiful Pabellón París building, itself a national monument, in the heart of Quinta Normal Park.

ROLLERCOASTERS AND BUMPER CARS

If fun is what you’re looking for, the recreational parks cannot be left off of the list. One of the sites most visited by Chileans and foreigners is Fantasilandia, the largest theme park in the country. With eight hectares that span across the traditional O’Higgins Park, the site offers more than 34 fun games for adults and children, the highlights being Galaxy Mountain, Extreme Fall, Bumper Boats and the House of Terror.

Another theme park alternative is the indoors Happyland, a chain of attractions located in the main shopping malls across the country. Bumper cars, mechanical and video games, simulators and bowling are the principal games that each Happyland site offers to keep youngsters entertained during a family afternoon.

Mampato is a good bet to keep children entertained for the day with a variety of fun games that are designed for youngsters under the age of 10. The House of Terror, the Panoramic Wheel and Bumper Cars are just some of the 16 games on offer in this chain of attractions, which has sites in three of the city’s neighborhoods.
